The Cable Car
The Haifa Cable Car, which links the Technion with Haifa University, HaMifratz Central Station, and the Check Post, is Israel’s first cable car designed for passenger transport, rather than just serving as a tourist attraction with views of the city. Stretching 4.5 km, it is the longest cable car line in Israel. With 148 cable cars departing every 15 seconds, the system reaches speeds of up to 18 km/h and can transport 2,400 passengers per hour, helping to reduce traffic congestion in the city.
The complex engineering project was developed over a span of about four years, opening to the public in April 2022. As a form of urban transport, it offers several environmental and urban benefits, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, lowering the risk of road accidents, and easing traffic jams. For those visiting the Technion, the cable car provides a fast and convenient way to reach the campus.
