In the center of the promenade rises one of the Technion’s hallmarks – the Obelisk, which was erected in 2009. The 28-meter-high environmental sculpture is made of 224 interlocking metal plates that can rotate around an axis and create a vision of dynamic movement. The monument was built to commemorate the establishment of the Russell Berrie Nanotechnology Institute at the Technion by the international architect and engineer, Santiago Calatrava Valls. In the dark, the entire length of the obelisk is illuminated with special lighting from its base.
