The Forest Trail

Nobel Avenue

Planting a tree carries a lot of symbolism. Whether it is our contribution to the cycle of nature’s renewal, or the idea that the tree will ‘grow’ with us, symbolizing our visit to that site.

The first to plant trees on the Technion campus was none other than Prof. Albert Einstein. In 1923, Einstein and his wife planted two palm trees in the courtyard of the old Technion, in Hadar, Haifa. The trees remain there to this day.

Over time, many individuals have participated in this green initiative, leaving their mark by planting a tree and contributing to the campus’s distinctive natural landscape. Among them are several distinguished figures who share a unique commonality – they are Nobel Prize winners.

Nobel Avenue is also home to a tree planted by Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former President of Israel, Shimon Peres. The tree was planted during a special ceremony on January 8, 2014 – a day marked by a panel of Nobel Prize winners dedicated to discussing the future of science.
