The Heart of Campus Trail

Tree Hospital
Maintaining the Technion as a forest city that combines vegetation alongside an urban landscape often creates architectural challenges.
The staircases leading down from the ‘Michlol’ store towards the promenade are an example of an effort to preserve existing trees alongside infrastructure renewal and campus development. In 2019, prior to the casting of the stairs, professional and careful thinking was carried out in stages to ensure minimal damage to the vegetation alongside functional and modern construction.
The design was carried out by landscape architect Batya Keshet and under the close supervision of the office of agronomist Hanoch Burger.
In the first stage, a survey of the trees was carried out, exploratory work to investigate the roots, and the trees were wrapped in protective cloth.
In the second stage, the granulite, concrete, and wild stone was carefully dismantled.
In the third stage, irrigation canals were dug and a perforated threaded pipe with a top air opening was inserted, with the aim of providing moisture and humidity as well as introducing oxygen and releasing CO2.
In the fourth stage, geotechnical fabric was spread over the entire area to prevent drying, oxidation and radiation, as well as protection from casting fluids.
In the fifth stage, special concrete was poured and finished with stone cladding.
